Aqua Terra Home Page King County, WA Hydrometeorological Data Web Site

Client: King County Department of Natural Resources, Seattle, WA

Since 1995, AQUA TERRA Consultants has been providing assistance to King County in the development and implementation of a web site which contains the hydrometeorlogical data collected by King County Staff. The scope of work for this ongoing project includes development, testing and implementation of all of the necessary components to allow users to view and download data for over 500 different gaging locations. This includes developing software capable of allowing easy and timely updating of newly collected data. AQUA TERRA's work for the County has resulted in the following tasks:

- Task 1: Development of software capable of constructing and maintaining the Hydrometeorlogical database.

- Task 2: Development of the web site and the database connectivity.

- Task 3: Development of software capable of converting and loading newly collected data.

Under Task 1, several Visual Basic programs were written to convert existing text formatted data into over 50 separate Access databases. This program constructs the databases from scratch and prepares the data to be accessible by the web site.

Under Task 2, the web site was constructed using a combination of standard HTML code and a software package called Cold Fusion. Cold Fusion allows for the easy database connectivity from an HTML environment. Using this database connectivety the user can search for a gage using a search engine or using a clickable map. Both daily and fifteen minute data is available for viewing or downloading.

Under Task 3, an Access database program was developed which takes raw data generated by either the rainfall or streamflow gages maintained by King County and converts the raw data into an Access database. This data can be easily output in a format recognized by the programs generated in Task 1.

This web site in now up and running.
